A custom sticker only prints as well as the file you upload. Most disappointing stickers trace back to a blurry image, a busy background or text that’s too small to read. This checklist covers what to get right before you upload.
1. Use the right file type
| File | Use it when |
|---|---|
| PNG | Shaped stickers; supports a transparent background |
| JPG | Photos and rectangular designs |
| WEBP | Fine if that’s what your app exports |
Avoid screenshots and images sent through chat apps: they’re usually compressed and lose detail.
2. Make it big enough
Print needs far more detail than a phone screen. A good rule is about 300 pixels per inch at the printed size. If your image looks soft when you zoom to 100%, it will look soft on the sticker too.
- Export at the largest size your app allows.
- Don’t upscale a small image in an editor; it adds blur, not detail.
3. Sort out the background
- Transparent background (PNG): best for shaped, die-cut style stickers. The cut can follow your design.
- White or plain background: fine; keep it clean, without shadows or texture.
- Busy photo background: crop tighter or remove the background first.
4. Leave a border and some space
Many shaped stickers have a white border around the design. It makes the sticker easier to cut and peel, and helps it stand out on dark laptops and bottles. Keep important details (text, faces, logos) a little away from the edge.
5. Check text and thin lines
- Text should still be easy to read when the design is shrunk to sticker size. Print it at actual size on paper to check.
- Very thin lines can disappear; thicken them slightly.
- High contrast (dark on light, light on dark) reads best from a distance.
6. Colours
Screens glow; print doesn’t. Very bright neon colours and deep blacks can look slightly different on paper or vinyl than on your phone. Keep a little contrast between your colours.
Common artwork problems and fixes
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry edges | Image too small or compressed | Export the original at full size |
| Grey or coloured box around the design | Background not removed | Use a transparent PNG or a plain white background |
| Text hard to read | Font too small or too thin | Make text larger and bolder, or cut words |
| Design touches the edge | No space left for the border | Add a margin around the design |
| Colours look dull | Very bright screen colours don’t print the same | Increase contrast; avoid relying on neon |
| Odd shape after cutting | Stray pixels or a soft shadow around the design | Clean up the edges and remove drop shadows |
Photos as stickers
Photos make great stickers if you treat them like a design, not a snapshot:
- Crop tight to the person, pet or object.
- Remove or simplify the background so the outline is clear.
- Use good light. A dark photo prints darker still.
- Pick the original, not a version saved from social media.
Designing on a phone
You don’t need professional software. Many phone apps can remove backgrounds, add a white outline and export a PNG. Before you upload, zoom in to 100% and check the edges: if they look jagged or blurry on your screen, they will on the sticker too.
Your upload checklist
- Original file, not a screenshot
- PNG, JPG or WEBP, under 8 MB
- Sharp at 100% zoom
- Transparent or plain background
- Space and a border around the design
- Text readable at sticker size
Where to use your design
- A few copies, mixed with other designs: add it to a sticker pack (up to 4 custom designs in a 12-pack).
- 50 or more copies of one design: request a sticker printing quote.
