A laptop lid is the best sticker canvas you own: it’s flat, it’s seen every day, and it says something about you in every class, café and meeting. The difference between a lid that looks styled and one that looks messy is almost always the layout, not the stickers. Here are five layouts that work, plus how to plan yours.
Five laptop sticker layouts
1. The centrepiece
One large sticker in the middle (or covering the logo), with a few small ones around it. Clean, easy, and good for work laptops.
2. The grid
Same-size stickers in neat rows. Satisfying and very “planned”. Works best with a pack of matching designs.
3. The border
Stickers along the edges and corners, leaving the centre clear. Good if you like your laptop’s colour.
4. Scattered or collage
Stickers overlapping and filling the lid. The most personal look. Build it from the centre outwards so there are no awkward gaps at the end.
5. One theme
Every sticker from one theme: coquette bows, food, music, quotes or space. A themed set always looks intentional.
How to plan your laptop sticker layout
- Measure the lid and note anything to avoid: the logo (if you want it visible), the camera and any vents.
- Choose the layout from the list above.
- Pick a palette. Two or three colours that repeat across the stickers.
- Lay everything out on the closed lid with the backing still on, then take a photo.
- Apply from the centre out. Our guide on how to put stickers on a laptop covers cleaning and avoiding bubbles.
Laptop sticker ideas by personality
- Student: books, coffee, “exam week” quotes, your university club logo.
- Developer or designer: minimal line icons, retro computers, a single bold slogan.
- Soft and cute: bows, pearls, strawberries, pastel flowers.
- Music fan: headphones, vinyl records, lyrics.
- Traveller: maps, planes, stickers from places you’ve been.
- One of a kind: your own drawings or photos as stickers.
Choosing sticker sizes for a laptop
You don’t need exact measurements, just a sense of proportion:
- One or two large stickers give the layout a focal point.
- Several medium stickers do most of the work.
- A handful of small ones fill gaps and tie colours together.
A 13-inch lid fills up faster than a 15- or 16-inch one, so on smaller laptops lean towards fewer, smaller stickers. Lay them out with the backing on before committing.
Work-friendly laptop stickers
If your laptop goes to meetings, client visits or video calls:
- Choose minimal, pastel or illustrative designs over slogans.
- Keep stickers away from the camera and the logo if your workplace prefers it visible.
- Use the border layout, which keeps the lid mostly clean.
- Avoid anything you wouldn’t want a client to read upside down across a table.
Looking after a stickered laptop
- Clean around stickers with a soft, barely damp cloth; don’t scrub the edges.
- Avoid heat and direct sun for long periods; adhesives soften and edges can lift.
- Keep vents, hinges and ports clear, especially on the underside and back edge.
- Use a sleeve if you carry the laptop in a bag with keys or chargers, to protect sticker edges.
Changing your layout later
Tastes change, and that’s half the fun. When you want a fresh look, follow our guide on removing stickers and residue, clean the lid, and start a new layout.
